Steve had sworn to himself that if he had made it out of that jungle alive, if Wo Fat was put behind bars once and for all, he’d tell Danny how he felt.

He promised to the heavens that if he could pull through he’d spill the secret desires that had wedged themselves inside his heart, enveloped his soul, and overtaken his thoughts.

And, somehow, fate had pulled through and here he was standing on the tarmac and Danny’s walking towards him, and Steve’s breath catches in his throat and he knows he has a ridiculously goofy face on right now, but he can’t believe how relieved he feels. How knowing that Danny is here, right in front of him, close enough to touch, has suddenly grounded him like the past few weeks of stress and anxiety have been wiped away.

Danny is here and safe. And now Steve has a promise to make good on; he has to tell Danny how he feels, but Danny’s so close and so utterly perfect in all of his imperfections and Steve can’t form any words, let alone words of love and commitment.

So, all that comes out is Book ‘em Danno because that’s safe and Steve’s mouth is used to saying those words. But the way that Danny looks back at him, although still spouting snarky comments like always, tells Steve he knows. He knows that something’s changed between them, the air has shifted, and although the words are the same, the meaning is altered.

The term of endearment is so much more now.

It’s a promise that when things die down and the criminals are put away and they are together, just the two of them, a couple of beers on the table, words will be said, promises will be made, but for now, the familiar phrase will have to do.
